Diagnostic Focus: Low-Pressure Feed Restriction Under Load
An engine can produce acceptable rail pressure at idle but fail to maintain the required pressure during higher fuel demand.
This does not automatically prove high-pressure pump wear.
Idle Demand Is Limited
At idle, the high-pressure pump requires a comparatively small fuel supply.
A partially restricted filter, pickup or supply line may still meet that demand.
Under load:
fuel demand rises → restriction creates larger pressure loss → high-pressure pump inlet supply becomes inadequate.
Compare Conditions
A useful investigation compares:
- idle supply pressure;
- loaded supply pressure;
- restriction or inlet vacuum;
- rail-pressure command and actual response.
The key is identifying which pressure changes first.
Avoid Replacing the Downstream Component First
A high-pressure pump cannot produce stable rail pressure if it is being starved upstream.
Replacing it without verifying the feed circuit can leave the same symptom.
